Iran agrees to release two detained Germans

TEHRAN, Feb. 20 (MNA) -- Iran has agreed to release the two German nationals after commuting their sentences, the Public Relations Department of the Judiciary reported on Saturday.

The Iranian court has commuted the 20-year imprisonment sentence of two German reporters to a fine of around $50,000, the report said.

Each of the German nationals was sentenced to 20-year imprisonment, but it became clear that they were abused and deserve to be granted Islamic clemency, it added.

The two German nationals, who had entered Iran on tourist visas, were arrested in October 2010 for trying to interview relatives of Sakineh Ashtiani without having obtained journalistic credentials. Sakineh Ashtiani has been convicted of adultery and murder.
