NATO boss stresses no plans for military intervention in Libya

Berlin, Feb 26, IRNA -- NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen stressed Friday there were no plans for a military intervention in strife-torn Libya, according to media reports.
Talking after an emergency session of 28 NATO ambassadors in Brussels, Rasmussen said while the western military pact was ready to assist in humanitarian aid in Libya, it was not planning any concrete military actions.
NATO will monitor the situation in Libya very carefully together with other international organizations, Rasmussen was cited saying.
The alliance would continue to coordinate and consult for any likely contingency plans, he added.
NATO diplomats were also quoted saying there were no immediate plans for military acts.
Rasmussen said in earlier in the day that NATO should focus primarily on evacuating foreigners from Libya, in addition to providing humanitarian aid to the North African country.
Thousands of foreigners, many of them from NATO countries like Turkey, have either been or are still awaiting evacuation from Libya as a result of the deteriorating security situation in that country./end
