Iran’s National Orchestra returns but falls below expectations

TEHRAN, Feb.26(MNA) -- After a two-year hiatus, Iran’s National Orchestra returned with its new conductor, but its performance fell short of expectations.

On Thursday evening, the audience left Tehran’s Vahdat Hall dissatisfied with the poor performance of the orchestra during the 26th Fajr International Music Festival.

“The orchestra had neither the majesty nor the impressive voice of the past,” the report criticized.

Bardia Kiaras led the orchestra by performing works of Hossein Dehlavi’s “Bijan and Manijeh”, Hossein Alizadeh’s “Neynava”, “The Dancing” and “Greetings” and several other pieces.

The repertoire was inhomogeneous and the orchestra tarnished the selected pieces of the repertoire, previously performed by other prominent musicians.

Novice singer, Puria Akhavas, had neither a clear voice nor was in tune with the ensemble, accompanied the orchestra.

Officials of the orchestra, who were selected by the Music Office of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, appointed Kiaras, 31, to the orchestra last December in place of the veteran musician Farhad Fakhreddini, who had founded the orchestra in 1998.

Fakhreddini, 73, resigned on July 13, 2009, following the Music Office’s decision to hand over the management of the orchestra to the Rudaki Foundation.

The decision was made after Fakhreddini refused to perform concerts scheduled for Tehran’s Vahdat Hall from June 18 to 20, 2009, when the result of the June 12 presidential election provoked protests in the city.

Fakhreddini said that the situation was ‘incongruous to listen to music and perform the concert’ gave his reasons for his cancellation of the concerts.

The National Orchestra made its debut concert along with world-renowned Iranian vocalist Mohammadreza Shajarian in 1998 when Fakhreddini directed it in reminiscent works composed by Ali Tajvidi.
