Iranian warships arrive in Syria
TEHRAN, Feb.26(MNA) -- Two Iranian warships docked in Syria on Wednesday after passing through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea.
They are the first Iranian Navy vessels to enter the Mediterranean Sea since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
The commander of the Iranian Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, told reporters that the ships are not performing military exercises but are only making a routine and friendly visit.
The warships carry the message of peace and friendship to the countries of the world, Sayyari stated.
He went on to say that the Iranian warships’ trip to the Mediterranean Sea is in accordance with international conventions.
The commander of the Iranian Navy also stated that one of the goals of the mission is to provide training to students of the Imam Khomeini Naval Academy, which is located on the Caspian Sea in Noshahr, Mazandaran Province.
