Indian leader asks Ghaddafi to fulfill people’s desire of reforms

New Delhi, Feb 26, IRNA - A senior Indian leader Friday asked Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Ghaddafi to fulfill people’s desire of democratic reforms.
“Instead of violent crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters, Libyan authorities must exercise restraint and respect basic freedoms,' member of Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) Sitaram Yechury told IRNA in an exclusive interview.
Denouncing the Libyan government's use of armed forces against protesters, the senior Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), said that the wishes of the Libyan peoples for a free and democratic polity must be respected by Ghaddafi.
“These protests are a genuine expression of the Libyan people’s will to reject the anti-democratic Ghaddafi regime,” Yechury said.
The united protest by all sections of the society was significant and a powerful manifestation for demanding the establishment of democratic rule, he added.
The Indian leader believed that public uprisings in Libya, Tunisia, Bahrain, Yemen, Algeria, were a warning stern to the governments that were suppressing the democratic rights of the people.
While extending his full support to the united movement of Libyans in their fight for the freedom, Yechury also congratulated Egyptians for their success in overthrowing the Hosni Mubarak regime./end
