Lebanon’s mufti calls for Iran’s greater role in realization of Islamic unity
TEHRAN, Feb.28(MNA) – Lebanon’s Sunni Muslim mufti said that Iran has high status in the Islamic world, so it should play a more significant role in the realization of Islamic unity.
Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Kabbani made the remarks during a meeting with Tehran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Ghazanfar Roknabadi, in Beirut on Saturday.
He underscored the importance of Islamic unity and urged all Muslims to make every effort to achieve this goal.
Kabbani also commented on the root causes of the recent uprisings against governments in the Middle East and North Africa, saying people are campaigning for improvement of their living standards and the governments are making concessions to appease protesters, but it is not people’s only demand.
People have other demands which are related to the Palestine issue and other issues facing the Islamic ummah.
Roknabadi highlighted the leading role ulama (religious scholars) can play in consolidating unity among Muslims, especially at the current critical juncture.
He said that the Islamic Republic of Iran has taken numerous measures to promote Islamic unity like holding many conferences aimed at finding the potential solutions for removal of obstacles in the way of the Islamic countries’ integration.
The Iranian ambassador also criticized the media outlets affiliated to the global arrogance (the forces of imperialism) for provoking discord among Muslims.
