52 % of Iranians are vulnerable to non-communicable diseases

TEHRAN, Feb. 28 (MNA)-- Low consumption of fruits and vegetables, smoking, lack of activity, obesity and hypertension are 5 main non-communicable risk factors affecting 52% of Iranians.

Dr. Jalil Koohpayeh Zadeh, Iranian director of the department of non-communicable risk factors at Health Ministry, said Only 10 to 12 percent of people take enough fruits and vegetables, while everyone should have 5 units of them a day.

He said life style correction, proper diet, enough activity and non-smoking are very important in preventing non-communicable diseases.

A study of 30,000 examples of risk factors, taken from 2005 to 2010, shows that no ideal progress has been made in preventing such diseases, he noted.

He added Iran`s Ministry of Health is not the only responsible body for public health and other organizations should play their role as well, Koohpayeh Zadeh explained.

Koohpayeh Zadeh said 50% of people, especially women, between ages 15 to 64 are obese.
