Israel worried about Iranian warships in Mediterranean: Syria

TEHRAN, Mar.1(MNA) -- Syrian Defense Minister Ali Habib Mahmoud said the presence of Iranian warships in the Mediterranean has surprised the Israelis.

Mahmoud made the remarks in a meeting with the commander of the Iranian Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, in Damascus on Monday.

Sayyari and a number of other Navy officials travelled to Syria to attend a ceremony to welcome two Iranian warships that docked in Syria on Wednesday, February 23 after passing through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea.

“More than anything else Israel’s reaction is interesting, since with this move it has been crippled and is very worried,” the Syrian defense minister stated.

“We (Syria) are paying no attention to this concern, and this makes them more irritated,” he added.

It is essential that Iran and Syria expand their cooperation, especially in maritime activities, Mahmoud said.

Sayyari also called for the expansion of Iran-Syria ties in all areas and expressed hope that through signing memorandums of understanding, the two countries will be able to increase their maritime cooperation.
