Japan Cabinet to approve sanctions against Libya on Tues

TOKYO, March 7 Kyodo - The Cabinet of Prime Minister Naoto Kan will approve sanctions against Libya on Tuesday, with the intention of freezing any assets in Japan belonging to six Libyans, including the nation's leader Muammar Gaddafi, and ban them and 10 others from entering or leaving Japan, a government source said Monday.
The move follows a U.N. Security Council resolution late last month aimed at stopping the Libyan government's crackdown on antigovernment protestors in the African country.
In response to the Cabinet approval, the government will check with Japanese banks and the branches of foreign banks in Japan whether they have any deposit, trust or loan arrangements linked to those Libyans, another source said. It will take about a week to complete the process.
Japan's trade volume with Libya is relatively small, with the value of Japan's annual exports standing at around 30 billion yen and imports at some 100 million yen. With Iran, another oil exporter for example, the comparable figures come to about 180 billion yen and 980 billion yen.
The 15-member U.N. Security Council on Feb. 26 voted unanimously to impose an asset freeze on Gaddafi, his daughter and four sons. The six were also named among 16 individuals, including more family members and other officials, who are subject to a travel ban.
