U.S. committed to help Japan recover from quake: Ambassador Roos

TOKYO (Kyodo) - U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos said Saturday that the United States will continue to offer whatever support is needed to help Japan recover from a powerful earthquake that struck northeast Japan on Friday.
The United States is sending Air Force personnel and Marines stationed in Okinawa, southern Japan, to U.S. military bases on Japan's main island of Honshu, Roos said, adding that the U.S. aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan will also arrive off Japan on Saturday night to support their efforts.
The U.S. forces are planning to provide assistance, including medical, communication and civil engineering, to people in the afflicted areas in cooperation with Japan's Self-Defense Forces, he said.
''The United States is absolutely committed to helping Japan in any way possible'' recover from the catastrophe, Roos said at a press conference in Tokyo.
He also emphasized the United States is closely monitoring developments at the troubled No. 1 reactor of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant after an explosion.
The Japanese government confirmed an explosion took place at the plant but said it did not occur at its reactor.
He said U.S. nuclear experts are now in touch with their Japanese counterparts to analyze the ongoing situation.
Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy in Japan has received no reports of U.S. citizens being killed or seriously injured in the deadly quake, Roos said, calling on Americans to follow the instructions of Japanese authorities.
