Korean cadet becomes vice wing commander at U.S. Air Force Academy

SEOUL (Yonhap) - A South Korean Air Force cadet attending the U.S. Air Force Academy was assigned as a vice wing commander at the U.S. military college, becoming the first foreign cadet who took such a post, the South's Air Force said Thursday.
Cadet Bae Jae-jin, who is taking a four-year curriculum of study at the U.S. Air Force Academy under an exchange program with the Korean Air Force Academy, was named in January to the second-highest position a cadet can hold, the Air Force said in a statement.
It was the first time that a foreign cadet was named a vice wing commander, who commands authority over some 4,500 cadets in the school, in the 63-year history of the U.S. Air Force Academy, according to the statement.
The U.S. military academy's Cadet Wing consists of 40 cadet squadrons. Each cadet squadron has some 100 cadets, the statement said.
In the statement, Bae thanked the Korean Air Force Academy for allowing him to take a four-year curriculum of study at the U.S. Air Force Academy and said he "will make utmost efforts to devote myself to my studies."
Since 1968, the Korean Air Force Academy has sent 20 cadets to the U.S. Air Force Academy as part of efforts to promote understanding and enhance military-to-military relationships of both nations.
