Hundreds of thousands march in Germany against nuclear energy

Berlin, Mar 27, IRNA -- Hundreds of thousands of anti-nuclear protesters took to the streets of Germany amidst the ongoing atomic catastrophe in Japan, demanding the permanent closures of the country's 17 nuclear plants, organizers announced Saturday.
More than 250,000 people, among them many young families, marched peacefully in major German cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne to say 'no' to nuclear energy in their country.
Protesters expressed deep scepticism on Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to shutdown the nuclear reactors for a three-month security check moratorium in the wake of Japan's nuclear fiasco, branding it a pre-election trick ahead of Sunday's crucial regional vote in two German states.
The vote in the states of Baden-Wuerttemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate is also widely regarded as a referendum on Merkel's policies./end
