South Korea sales of imported vehicles hit record high in March
(ATTN: UPDATES with more information in paras 6-9)
SEOUL, April 5 (Yonhap) -- Sales of imported vehicles in South Korea surged to a new monthly high in March, topping the 10,000-unit mark for the first time, a local trade body said Tuesday.
A total of 10,290 import vehicles were sold here in March, up 52 percent from the same period last year, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA).
"Sales of new import vehicles in March were greatly boosted by aggressive marketing efforts by companies and the start of the Seoul Motor Show," said Yoon Dae-sung, a senior official of KAIDA.
Sales of import vehicles in the first three months of the year also jumped 29.1 percent on-year from 19,917 units to 25,719 units, according to KAIDA.
BMW once again was the best selling foreign brand in South Korea with 2,982 vehicles sold in March alone, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 1,712 units and Volkswagen with 888 units.
BMW Korea, the South Korean unit of BMW Group, later said its monthly sales came to 3,447 units in March when including sales of its BMW Mini and Rolls Royce vehicles, making BMW the first foreign brand ever in South Korea to sell over 3,000 units in a single month.
"The overall sales increase was helped by the continued performance of the BMW 528i, which has been one of best selling models here since its launch in April 2010, and sales of the new BMW 520d diesel," the company said in a press release.
BMW earlier said it is pushing to sell over 20,000 cars in South Korea this year, a slight increase from some 19,000 units last year.
Out of all new import vehicles sold last month, nearly half or 43.6 percent were small cars with an engine displacement of 2,000 cubic centimeters or less, according to KAIDA.
The record sales in March gave the green light to foreign car companies in South Korea, which are seeking to increase their combined sales to a record high of over 100,000 units this year.
Foreign vehicle dealers saw a record year in 2010 with their combined sales jumping 48.5 percent on-year to 90,562 units.
