OBAMA EXTENDS GREETINGS TO IACI ON RI'S INDEPENDENCE COMMEMORATION
Jakarta, Aug 28 (ANTARA) - US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has extended warm greetings to the Indonesian American Community of Illinois (IACI) during the commemoration of the 63rd anniversary of Indonesian Independence in Chicago, it was reported here Thursday.
"This occasion not only marks an important day for Indonesia but also highlights and celebrates Indonesian culture," Obama said in a written statement.
Indonesia's Independence Day fell on August 17.
"I trust that you take great pride in your community here and abroad and that you are delighted to be able to share this day with the people of Chicago," he said.
Obama hoped that the celebration would be enjoyable and memorable for all attendees. "I wish you much success in the future," Obama said.
Meanwhile, IACI's Chairperson Roosy Miller had also given her written message during the commemoration of Indonesian Independence at the Daley Plaza in Chicago.
"We are commemorating the event on Monday, August 25, 2008, since August 17 is Sunday this year," she said.
Indonesia won independence after an armed struggle over several years just like the United States, she said, adding, "Like the United States, we count our years of independence from the declaration, not the peace treaty."
"Today, Indonesia is the world's fourth largest country in population, and the world's third largest democracy," she said.
In Indonesia, 2008 is Visit Indonesia Year. Indonesia is hosting the World Cultural Forum this year, in Bali in 2008, under the theme 'Local Synergy, Global Strategy', she said.
Through 2008, Indonesia will stage 100 international-scale events and cultural festivals as part of the forum.
"Unfortunately, I am presently visiting Indonesia and regret missing the event, and I want especially to acknowledge the work of Martino Tangkar and the Board for staging this event," she said.
On behalf of the Indonesian American Community of Illinois, she especially thanked Mayor Daley and the Mayor's Office of Special Events for their help to make this important moment happen.
