NO MASS LAYS OFF OF WORKERS: MINISTER
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Aug 29 (ANTARA) - Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno said concern about the possibility of mass lays off of workers as a result of fuel oil price hikes did not come into a reality.
"There are no mass lays off because the problem could be handled and manged properly," the minister said after a meeting with Yoyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X here on Friday.
He said that in the first semester of 2008 there 11,500 lays off of workers while in the whole year of 2007 the number of workers laid off reached 25,000.
Previously, the number of lays off in 2006 were recorded at 36,000 which decreased if compared with that in 2005 which reached 109,000 workers.
"This is thanks to and a result of the conducive and harmonious labor industrial relations programs where the government encouraged bipartite negotiations between workers and employers so that companies did not carry out mass lays off," the minister said.
Suparno said that lays off that had happened in the first semester of this year were partial in nature . Most of the 11,500 laid off in the first semester were workers of mismanaged companies not of disputes over the labor industrial relations due to bankruptcy.
