New Delhi, April 12, IRNA – Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday embarked on a five-day tour to China and Kazakhstan.

On the first leg of his tour, Dr. Singh will be in Sanya, China to attend the BRICS Summit.

The forthcoming BRICS Summit is the third in a row, the first one of which was held in Yekaterinburg in Russia on June 2009 while its second session took place in Brasilia in April 2010.

The upcoming BRICS meeting will witness participation of South Africa for the first time. India welcomes South Africa’s membership at the body.

The Indian prime minister will hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Brazilian President Dilma Rouseff and South African President Jacob Zuma in Sanya on the sidelines of the summit, said Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

Dr. Singh will then proceed to Kazakhstan on April 15 on a two-day official visit at the invitation of President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The trip would be his first visit to Kazakhstan and his second to Central Asia after his visit to Uzbekistan in 2006.

President Nazarbayev is a long-standing friend of India. He last visited India as the Chief Guest attending the country's Republic Day celebrations in 2009. He visited India three times in 1992, 1996 and 2002./end
