SAFEGUARD NATION'S INDEPENDENCE, SAYS M'SIAN DPM

PEKAN (Malaysia), Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak today reminded Malaysians to safeguard the nation's independence achieved 51 years ago and not easily "mortgage" it to others.

"If we do not safeguard the nation's independence, we will be left yearning
for our independence if we (the (National Front) Barisan Nasional government)
lose power," he said.

As such, the people should resolve to support the government so that the
country is not "mortgaged" to others, he said after handing over the "Jalur
Gemilang" national flag to village chiefs at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Maulana,
here. Pahang Chief Minister Adnan Yaakob was also present.

Pahang is situated in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Najib said the independence of the nation was an invaluable thing which
should be safeguarded for all time.

Earlier, Najib launched a padi harvest and a batik club at the school.

In KUALA LUMPUR, MIC president S. Samy Vellu called on Malaysians to
revisit Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj's proclamation of independence to
embrace the true spirit of Merdeka.

Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) is a Malaysian political party and is one
of the founding members of the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional.

He said the country's first prime minister and Father of Independence opened
the path for all Malaysians to live in harmony and respect each other.

"Today, we need to bring back that spirit ignited by the great Tunku, our
nation's founding father," he said in his Merdeka Day message.

He quoted the late Tunku Abdul Rahman's proclamation which reads "that from
31st Aug 1957, (we) shall be forever a sovereign, democratic and independent
state founded upon the principles of liberty and justice and ever seeking the
welfare and happiness of its people".

When the proclamation was made, Samy Vellu said, it was on the basis that
Malaysians irrespective of race and colour would live as "one nation, one voice,
one spirit".

"Our leaders (past and present) have fought along the lines of this
proclamation, but what is important for us is to ensure that there is no
deviation," he said.

As such, he said, all quarters should refrain from making racist remarks
that could hurt the feelings of the various races and eventually cause disunity.

He said one could fight for his community's rights within the allowed
parameters, "but at the end of the day, we must realise that we live in a
multi-racial country".

Calling on Malaysians to remain united, he said the country's future would
depend on how far they would go to maintain racial unity.

"As we embark on a new chapter in our history, we must remain united. Our
future lies on our shoulders," he said.

MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan said this year's National Day
theme of "Perpaduan Teras Kejayaan" (Solidarity the basis for Success) reflected
the government's desire for solidarity to be the main agenda of national
development.
Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) is one of the three major
component parties of the ruling coalition in Malaysia called the Barisan
Nasional (BN)

"In facing a challenging era of globalisation and information democracy, I
call on Malaysians to renew their determination and resolve to step up
cooperation and understanding among one another," he said in his Merdeka Day
message.

Ong, who is Housing and Local Government Minister, said the people had
toiled since independence and have seen the fruits of developing the nation in a
just manner.

"Let us appreciate this life of ours as fortunate Malaysians," he said.

National Unity Advisory Panel member Lee Lam Thye said one way of
making the young generation patriotic and nationalistic was to educate them to
respect and love the national flag.

"Organising Love Our Flag campaigns among young children in schools is
important in instilling an understanding in them on the significance of the
national flag. These campaigns should be held not only during the National Day
celebrations but throughout the year," he said in a statement.

More efforts must be taken to enable the young to appreciate the true
meaning of independence, he said, adding that Malaysians have shown the spirit
of patriotism and contributed their views and opinions in what they felt was
good and healthy for the country.

People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) (PKR) advisor and Opposition
Leader Anwar Ibrahim said it was the responsibility of the people to ensure that
democracy prevailed and they upheld the constitution and strengthened the rule
of law.

In KANGAR, Perlis Chief Minister Dr Md Isa Sabu called on the
people to foster unity and patriotism in their activities to retain the true
meaning of independence.

Launching a Merdeka programme in Sanglang, he advised the younger
generation to enrich themselves with knowledge on the country's
independence.
