Ambassador: Iran-Azerbaijan Republic economic ties outlook excellent

Oroumeyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, April 16, IRNA – Ambassador of Azerbaijan Republic in Tehran said that the outlook of economic ties between Tehran and Baku is excellent and promising.

Javanshir Akhoundov, in an exclusive interview with IRNA here on Friday evening, said that presidents of both countries have underlined the development of cooperation in all fields.

Currently, level of trade exchange between the two countries is around 500 million dollars annually and considering existing capacities, it can increase noticeably, he added.

On exchanging two billion cubic meters of gas between Tehran and Baku, Akhoundov said that the figure, according to the signed agreement, can reach five billion cubic meters annually in the future.

Referring to signed agreement concerning construction of railway between Astara-Rasht, he said that in the first phase of this cooperation agreement, 25 million tons of goods can be transferred between the two countries.

'If the project is implemented completedly, exchanging goods between the Persian Gulf and North Europe would be possible,' said the ambassador.

He added that as a senior diplomat of his country here, he has traveled to many Iranian provinces such as West and East Azerbaijan, Ardebil, Zanjan, Mazandaran, Gilan, Khuzestan and Fars and has talked with investors and economic activists.

He continued that one of the obstacles on the way of expansion of economic ties between the two countries is transportation.
Akhoundov said that currently gas industry, chemical materials, foodstuff and construction materials are among most items for economic exchange between Iran and Azerbaijan Republic.

Azerbaijan Republic has an area of 86.6 thousand square kilometers and its population is more than 9 million.

The first trilateral meeting of foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan Republic will be held on Saturday April 16, 2011 here.
