IRGC Commander Terms EU Sanctions against Iranian Officials "Ridiculous"
TEHRAN, April 23 (FNA)- Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari downplayed the effects of the unilateral and international sanctions against Iran, saying the recent embargoes imposed by the EU against a number of Iranian officials are truly "funny and ridiculous".
"Such ridiculous measures show they are far from knowing the nature of the Revolution and the Islamic Republic's officials, the officials who have stood for the Revolution with all their power," Jafari told FNA on Saturday.
The European Union imposed a new round of sanctions, including asset freeze and travel bans, against 32 Iranian officials, including Jafari, over what they claim to be human rights abuses.
A number of Iranian officials who had earlier been targeted with sanctions and 'freeze of assets' said they don't care for the measure and mocked at the effort, reminding that they had never had any bank account in the West.
"We don't have anything inside Iran let alone outside the country that they want to freeze our assets outside Iran," Jafari said.
He said adopting such measures against the Iranian nation has further revealed the nature of the country's enemies, he stressed, "They (the enemies) should know that more overwhelming sanctions against the entire country have produced no effects, let alone such funny measures."
Iranian officials have dismissed such measures as more of a political publicity campaign against the Islamic Republic and part of an effort to pressure Iran into giving up its rights to continue with its peaceful nuclear program.
Iran also insists that the multiple sanctions previously adopted by the US and Europe have proved futile, as the country's economy and nuclear program remain on track and making steady progress.
Despite the hostile policies and moves of the United States and its European allies, Iran has shown a promising trend of growth in science and economy.
Iran is under four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions for turning down West's calls to give up its right of uranium enrichment, saying the demand is politically tainted and illogical. Yet, last year the US and the European Union approved a set of extra unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program, mostly targeting the country's energy and banking sectors, including a US boycott of gasoline supplies to Iran.
But the US fuel embargo on Iran proved futile after Iran boosted domestic production, attained self-sufficiency and even exported gasoline.
Iran says that western sanctions and pressures have only consolidated the Iranians' national resolve and encouraged them to reach self-sufficiency in many economic areas, including gasoline production.
