Activist Blames Saudi Arabia for Shrine Attacks in Egypt

TEHRAN, April 23   (FNA)- A prominent Egyptian religious figure blamed Saudi Arabia for supporting the recent attacks on holy Sufi and Shiite shrines by extremist Salafists in Egypt.
Earlier this month, attackers vandalized the Sidi Abdel Rahman shrine at a mosque in Qalyoub, North of Cairo, a move that many political observers believed to be supported by Saudi Arabia.

Speaking to FNA in Cairo, Head of Egypt's Higher Council of the Al al-Bait Muhammad Ad-Darini said that he believes Riyadh is behind the vandalism in Egypt.

He called Salafism as the most dangerous threat posed to the Egyptian society after January 25 Revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak's regime.

Darini stated that Salafists consider revolutionaries as anarchists that are provoked by Shiites.

He pointed to Saudi Arabia's negative role in supporting Salafi groups in Egypt, and added, "I believe that Saudi Arabia is behind the anti-revolution incidents in Egypt."

As regards the council's reaction to Riyadh's move, Darini noted, "We will unveil their goals and intentions and pressure Saudi Arabia through legal channels."

He added that the council will form social committees to protect the holy shrines, and added that they have asked the Egyptian army to probe into the recent incidents.
