IRGC Official Downplays EU Ban on Iranian Officials
TEHRAN, April 25 (FNA)- A senior official of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Sunday downplayed the recent bans imposed by the European Union on a number of Iranian officials and military commanders, saying that the EU sanctions and restriction will prove futile.
"It is a great honor for the IRGC and the Iranian nation to have nourished such individuals who have made the arrogant countries upset and angry," Head of the IRGC's Public Relations Office General Ramadan Sharif told FNA.
"Most of these individuals have had effective and useful performances in the Islamic ruling system in different fields and the EU move is a source of honor for us," Sharif stated.
These sanctions will prove futile, the General reiterated.
The comment by the IRGC official came days after the European Union on April 14, imposed travel bans and other sanctions against 32 Iranian police commanders, judges and prison wardens who, the bloc claims, have committed human rights abuses.
The new sanctions also include freezing of the individuals' assets in EU nations. The European Union earlier imposed similar sanctions against people with leading roles in Iran's nuclear program.
The US State Department imposed similar sanctions against eight Iranian officials in September.
Political analysts say that both actions are mainly symbolic, since very few Iranian officials travel to the US or the European Union.
