Iraq Threatens PGCC to Boycott Arab League Meetings
TEHRAN , April 26 (FNA)- Former National Security Advisor of the Iraqi government Mowaffak Al-Rubaie reiterated on Monday that if the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) cancels the Arab League meeting in Iraq, Baghdad will boycott all AL meetings in the future.
"Despite the opposition voiced by certain Arab countries, the Arab League will hold its meeting in Baghdad and if the meeting will be held in another country, Iraq will not participate in the meetings of the Arab League anymore," Rubaie told FNA.
He described the position taken by the PGCC as an unwise and hostile stance against Iraq, and stressed, "Iraq should enjoy all its rights in the Arab League like the other Arab Persian Gulf littoral states but the hostile position taken by the PGCC against Iraq will banish the country from the Arab and Islamic institutions."
Rubaie pointed out that Iraq's support for the oppressed Bahraini people has provoked the PGCC to adopt such an unwise stance, and underlined that Iraq is not a member of the PGCC to be obliged to comply with the policies of the Council.
The Arab League summit in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad was cancelled due to the influence and pressures of Saudi Arabia and some Persian Gulf littoral states.
The Arab League decided in its 2009 summit in Cairo to hold its next meeting in Baghdad.
The Iraqi government spent more than $400 million to prepare for this important Arab summit.
After the recent developments in the region, specifically the events in Bahrain and East of Saudi Arabia, and the stances taken by some Iraqi statesmen and clerics in support of the people of Bahrain, the Persian Gulf states put into force their decision to cancel the Arab League summit in Baghdad.
Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states claim that Iraq cannot host the Arab states summit due to the country's insecurity.
