Iran's FM Stresses Expansion of Transit Cooperation in Region

TEHRAN,April 26 (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, who is in Ashgabat to attend the second regional conference on transit and transportation cooperation, underscored that opening an international corridor to connect the Central Asia to the Persian Gulf is of paramount importance.
The second regional conference on transit and transportation cooperation kicked off work in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on Monday with the Iranian top diplomat in attendance.

During the conference, the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Oman discussed cooperation on the development of transit and transportation cooperation among their countries and inked a five-sided agreement on transit cooperation.

Addressing the meeting, Salehi said that the five-sided agreement on transit cooperation will revive the ancient Silk Road in the modern era.

"I am confident that the agreement will yield desirable and constructive results for the regional nations and will provide the five member states with useful and effective opportunities to launch international transportation and transit services," Salehi reiterated.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that all the existing capacities should be used to expand regional cooperation," the Iranian minister noted.

The Silk Road is an extensive interconnected network of trade routes across the Asian continent connecting Eastern, Southern and Western Asia with the Mediterranean world as well as North and Northeast Africa and Europe.

The Silk Road gets its name from the lucrative Chinese silk trade, a major reason for the connection of trade routes into an extensive trans-continental network.
