Iran's FM Sees Ashgabat Transit Agreement as "Promising Event" for Region

TEHRAN ,April 26 (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi stressed that the five-sided agreement signed by the regional states on transit cooperation heralds a prosperous future for regional development.
The agreement in Ashgabat promises a bright future for economic and transit cooperation as well as development, welfare and stability in the region, Salehi said.

The issue was raised in a meeting between Salehi and his Turkmen counterpart Rasit Meredow.

During the meeting, Meredow underlined that the five-sided meeting and the resultant agreement marked an important day for Turkmenistan.

He added that presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the meeting promoted the level of the five-partite gathering.

The second regional conference on transit and transportation cooperation kicked off work in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on Monday with the Iranian top diplomat in attendance.

During the conference, the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Oman discussed cooperation on the development of transit and transportation cooperation among their countries and inked a five-sided agreement on transit cooperation.
