Turkmenistan Hails Ashgabat Transit Agreement as "Landmark Move"
TEHRAN,April 26(FNA)- Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday lauded the positive outcomes of a five-sided meeting held in the Turkmen capital city of Ashgabat on Monday, including an agreement signed by the participating parties on transit cooperation, and described the meeting and its results as epoch-making.
The five-sided meeting for transit cooperation between Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Oman kicked off in Ashgabat on Monday, and participant could reach an agreement to boost regional cooperation in transit and transportation field.
The meeting was an outstanding step in line with boosting regional convergence, specially within the framework of economic ties.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry described the agreement as "an important step and a key historical event in convergence among the regional countries".
The ministry also termed the move as a first step in the establishment of a transit corridor throughout Asia that will be connected to South Asia, Africa and the Pacific Ocean in future.
Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi represented Iran at the meeting.
During the conference, the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Oman discussed cooperation on the development of transit and transportation cooperation among their countries and inked a five-sided agreement on transit cooperation.
