Envoy: Iran Enjoys Potentials to Become Regional Energy Hub

TEHRAN,April 26(FNA)- Iran enjoys abundant capacities and potentials to become a major regional hub for the transit of goods and energy, said Tehran's Ambassador to Ashgabat Seyed Mohammad Moussa Hashemi Golpayegani.
"We can cooperate with Ashgabat and other regional countries in the transit of any form of energy supplies, including gas, oil, electricity as well as oil and petrochemical products which are produced in Turkmenistan," Golpayegani told FNA on Tuesday.

Referring to the abundant transit roads built to connect the regional countries and to facilitate transportation of goods among them, he reiterated, "Iran can turn into an important center for the transit of goods and energy in the region."

Golpayegani announced that the mentioned issues were discussed during a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov in Ashgabat on the sidelines of the second regional conference on transit and transportation cooperation.

The second regional conference on transit and transportation cooperation kicked off work in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on Monday with foreign ministers and high-ranking officials of five regional countries in attendance.

During the conference, the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Qatar and Oman discussed cooperation on the development of transit and transportation cooperation among their countries and inked a five-sided agreement on transit cooperation.

Addressing the meeting, Salehi said that the five-sided agreement on transit cooperation will revive the ancient Silk Road in the modern era.

"I am confident that the agreement will yield desirable and constructive results for the regional nations and will provide the five member states with useful and effective opportunities to launch international transportation and transit services," Salehi reiterated.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that all the existing capacities should be used to expand regional cooperation," the Iranian minister noted.
