Commander Stresses Iran's Key Role in Regional Security
TEHRAN, April30(FNA)- All scenarios and plans to establish security in the region will remain futile without Iran's partnership, a senior Iranian military commander underscored.
"Without the presence of Iran as an indisputable regional power, all scenarios and plans to take security measures in the Persian Gulf lack legitimacy… and will never result in averting extra-regional threats and establishing sustainable security," Iran's Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said on Friday.
He criticized attempts by some countries to sign security pacts in the Persian Gulf without regard for Iran's strategic position, and said that such efforts are carried out under the influence of the United States.
He pointed to the lack of trust among regional countries and said the refusal of some of these states to sign regional security pacts and join extra-regional powers to provide their security creates tension in the region and intensifies the lack of trust.
The Iranian military commander said major world powers by hiding their evil intentions deceive Persian Gulf littoral states and encourage them to purchase modern, expensive military equipment such as US-made warships.
"It is evident that such attempts are aimed at sowing discord and creating tension in regional Muslim states and perhaps to promote the Iranophobia scenario so as to make huge economic profits …," Firouzabadi noted.
