Osama Bin Laden Killed in Pakistan

TEHRAN,May 2 (FNA)- US President Barack Obama announced that Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed in a US operation in Pakistan.
"Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, and a terrorist who's responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children," Obama said in a televised speech.

"The United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, in Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden, and took custody of his body," he added.

The US president further said that "The US has never been and will never be at fight with Islam," adding that bin Laden was also a mass-murderer of Muslims.

During the Sunday US operation that killed bin Laden, three other men -- including a son of the al-Qaeda leader -- and a woman were also killed.

"In addition to Osama bin Laden, three adult males were killed in the raid," an unnamed US official said, adding that one of them was believed to be an adult son of bin Laden.

Two other women were also injured in the raid that lasted less than 40 minutes, the official added.

The announcement of bin Laden's death comes almost ten years after the September 11 attacks on the United States that killed 3,000 people.

During the incident, 19 reported "al-Qaeda terrorists" hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and crashed two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings.
