Turkish president says they try to make productive contributions to Syria
ANKARA (A.A) - 02.05.2011 - Turkish President Abdullah Gul said, "Turkey tries to make constructive contributions to Syria in its efforts to make reforms and carry out the transition process in line with its people's legitimate demands."
President Gul told reporters at Ankara's Esenboga Airport prior to his departure for Austria, "we are also taking our measures in case of the worst scenario about recent developments in Syria. A few days ago, nearly 300 Syrian people crossed the border and took shelter in Turkey. They have been accommodated in several places. We hope that reforms would be made and transition would be completed in Syria without any more bloodshed. We also hope that a multi-party and democratic system would be established in Syria soon."
When asked about May Day celebrations in Turkey, President Gul said, "May 1st Workers' Day has shown the progress made by Turkey. May Day was celebrated throughout Turkey just like a festival. I am happy about it."
Referring to his visit to Vienna, President Gul said, "Austrian President Heinz Fischer paid a visit to Turkey in 2008 and became the first Austrian president visiting Turkey after 12 years. Now, I will be his guest."
"Recently, Austrian businessmen's investments in Turkey reached $5 billion. Turkey-Austria trade volume also exceeded $2 billion. Meanwhile, number of Austrian tourists who preferred Turkey for vacation, increased to 500 thousand. We consider Austria as one of our important partners," he said.
"Austria will the honorary guest of this year's international fair in western province of Izmir. 150 Austrian firms will take part in the event. During my stay in Vienna, I will attend the Turkey-Austria Business Forum along with President Fischer in order to boost economic and commercial relations between the two countries," he said.
Gul told reporters that besides Turkey-Austria bilateral relations, recent regional and global developments would be high on his agenda during his talks with Austrian authorities.
"Turkey and Austria share the same universal values including democracy, pluralism, rule of law, human rights and freedoms, gender equality, justice and respect to differences. I will also discuss with Australian authorities steps to be taken to combat against racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia. Austrian public opinion has some prejudices about Turkey's membership to the European Union. I will explain Turkey's future contributions to the European Union in an interview with the Austrian state-run TV channel Orf," he added.
President Gul is set to meet President Heinz Fischer in Vienna later in the day. The two leaders will hold a joint news conference after signing the Joint Economic Commission Protocol.
He will receive Austrian Parliament Speaker Barbara Prammer and partake in a banquet to be hosted in his honor by President Fischer.
President Gul is accompanied by State Minister Faruk Celik, State Minister for the European Union talks Egemen Bagis, deputies, academicians, businessmen and journalists.
