Sales of imported vehicles gain 13.8 pct in April
SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- Sales of imported vehicles in South Korea rose 13.8 percent last month from a year earlier amid growing demand here for luxury foreign cars, a local trade group said Wednesday.
A total of 8,204 foreign vehicles were sold here in April, compared with 7,208 units sold a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA).
The figure for April, however, marks a 20.3 percent drop from March when a monthly record of 10,290 vehicles was sold.
"Sales of imported vehicles in April dropped from the previous month when deliveries rose to a new high, but the figures are continuing to grow from last year," a KAIDA official, Yoon Dae-sung, said in a press release.
Sales of imported vehicles in the January-April period surged 25.1 percent from the same period last year to 33,923.
BMW was once again the best-selling foreign brand in the country with 2,253 units sold in April, up nearly 130 percent from the same period last year.
Mercedes-Benz was the next best-selling brand with 1,339 vehicles sold here, followed by Volkswagen with 1,063 units sold.
Out of all new imported vehicles sold in April, 42.6 percent were small cars with an engine displacement of 2,000 cubic centimeters or less.
Sales of imported vehicles shot up to a record high of 90,562 units last year, up 48.5 percent from a year earlier. The KAIDA says the number will likely top 100,000 units this year.
