Commander Urges Regional Rulers to Respect People's Rights, Demands

TEHRAN, May 4 (FNA)- A senior Iranian commander on Tuesday blasted the suppression of peaceful protests in the regional countries, and urged the regional governments to respect the rights and demands of their nations.
Pointing to the popular uprisings in the Middle-East and North Africa, Iranian Armed Forces Deputy Chief of Staff for Cultural Affairs and Defense Publicity Brigadier General Massoud Jazzayeri said, "The recent developments started in the region because rulers were ignoring the righteous demands of their people and also because people did not want their governments to be dependent on the aliens, specially the United States."

He further rapped the regional states' indifference to their people's demands, and added, "These governments had better have paid attention to their (people's) righteous demands instead of confronting, arresting, imprisoning, torturing and killing the protestors."

The military official also called on the regional rulers to "find fundamental ways to respect and observe their citizens' rights instead of blaming other states for unrests in their countries".

In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has swept the Arab world.

In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule.

Other revolutions, then, erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests have swept Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.
