Iran Underlines Full Support for Afghan Peace, Stability

TEHRAN , May 4 (FNA)- Establishment of peace and tranquility in Afghanistan requires a strong government in Kabul, a senior Iranian diplomat stressed.
Speaking in a meeting with Norway's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs Bjorn Janis Kanavin here in Tehran on Tuesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian and Oceanic Affairs Mohammad Ali Fathollahi underlined the necessity for establishment of a strong and stable government in Kabul.

"Afghanistan's long-term interests shouldn't be ignored just for the materialization of short-term interests such as victory in (the US next presidential) elections," Fathollahi said, alluding to the recent announcement of the death of Al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden, by US President Barack Obama.

Kanavin, for his part, stressed the necessity for all-out support for the establishment of peace in Afghanistan.

"We emphasize the necessity for realizing the realities in Afghanistan and avoiding hasty decisions about this country," Kanavin stated, adding that his country is running consultations with Iran to better realize issues of Afghanistan and the realities of this country.

Iranian officials have always underlined Tehran's support for peace and stability in Afghanistan, and called for an end to the foreign military presence in the war-torn country.

Iran and Afghanistan enjoy expanding ties and cooperation and observers believe that the good achievements gained in area of their mutual cooperation should be deemed as a result of the efforts made by the two countries' leaders.
