Iran to Boost Naval Capabilities, Missions
TEHRAN, May 4 (FNA)- Commander of Iran's Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari lauded Iran's powerful presence in the high seas, the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean in particular, and said the Navy's increased capabilities and missions inside and outside the country's territorial waters have contributed a major share in boosting the Islamic Republic's might and power.
Sayyari underlined that expanding naval capabilities promotes the country's national power, "hence, It is necessary to prepare the needed infrastructures as envisaged in the Vision Plan (for Iran's development)".
Reminding the country's powerful naval buildup outside Iran's territorial waters, he mentioned that the Iranian Navy has dispatched 14 fleets of warships to the high seas since 2008, and added that the Iranian navy ships have managed to secure safe passage for 1,000 ships and oil tankers.
"Continued presence in high seas signifies a country's scientific and military capabilities and expertise," he said, and continued, "Today, the Iranian fleets have proved the Islamic Republic of Iran's might."
The Admiral also noted the recent voyage to the Mediterranean Sea by the Iranian navy ships, and pointed out, "The Mediterranean Sea had become a backyard for the Zionists (Israel), and the Iranian navy's presence in the sea has promoted the country's national status from military and international viewpoints."
In February, two Iranian military vessels, Khark and Alvand, docked in Syria for training amid attempts by the United States and Israel to brand the mission as a cause for concern.
The 1,500-ton patrol frigate Alvand is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, while the larger 33,000-ton supply vessel Khark has 250 crewmembers and can carry three helicopters.
Earlier, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described the Iranian Army's Navy as "a strategic force".
Addressing Navy personnel on the occasion of the National Navy Day (November 28), Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that increasing manpower, recruiting talented personnel and taking innovations and initiatives into action are highly necessary for the future of the country's naval forces.
