Saudi People Stage Rally in Support of Bahraini Protesters

TEHRAN, May 8 (FNA)- A large number of Saudi people staged a rally in the country's Eastern city of Qatif to voice their support for the popular uprising in Bahrain and condemn the crimes committed against the Bahraini people by the Saudi and Manama regimes.
Despite tight security measures, Saudi protesters on Friday answered a call for massive demonstrations in the Eastern Province by the Kingdom's human rights campaigners.

The protesters also condemned the arbitrary detention of anti-government protesters.

Saudi Arabia's east has been the scene of anti-government protests over the past months and authorities have arrested scores of people, including bloggers and writers, for taking part in anti-government demonstrations.

Saudi protesters in the east are calling for human rights reform, freedom of expression and the release of political prisoners some held without trial for more than 16 years.

They have also urged the immediate withdrawal of Saudi troops from neighboring Bahrain.

Demonstrators in Bahrain have been demanding constitutional reforms as well as an end to the 230-year-old monarchy, with hundreds camping out peacefully in the capital's Pearl Square since February 14th.

Bahraini security forces have been brutally suppressing anti-government protesters. So far, at least 40 people have been killed, almost 100 have gone missing and about 1,000 others have been injured.

The violence against protesters escalated when Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar dispatched their armed forces to the country to help Manama crack down on peaceful protesters.
