Iran President in Istanbul to attend 4th LDC summit

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived here in Turkey Monday to take part in the 4th United Nations (UN) Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC).

The high-ranking Iranian delegation headed by President Ahmadinejad includes Presidential Advisor Mojtaba Samareh-Hashemi, Minister of Housing and Urban Development Ali Nikzad, Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi and Head of Presidential Office Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaei.

During his day-long visit to Turkey, the President is to hold separate meetings with several Turkish officials as well as officials from other participating countries on the sidelines of the event that is to begin later today for five days.

This is the first visit to a foreign country by President Ahmadinejad since the beginning of the new Iranian calendar year (started March 21).

The purpose of this UN conference is, on one hand, to assess the results of the 10-year action plan for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) adopted at the 3rd United Nations Conference on LDCs in Brussels, Belgium, in 2001.

And on the other, it is to adopt new measures and strategies for the sustainable development of the LDCs into the next decade.
