TEHRAN,May 9 (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran for Istanbul, Turkey, on Monday in a bid to take part in the 4th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries.
Ahmadinejad was seen off at Tehran's International Mehrabad Airport by First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi and Supreme Leader's Advisor for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati.

During his daylong stay in Istanbul, the Iranian president is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Turkish President Abdullah Gul as well as other statesmen participating in the event.

Turkey will host the fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries on May 9-13 in Istanbul, one of the gatherings held by the world body to help the poorer nations improve their infrastructures and welfare.

Studying implementation of the previous development plans (devised by 2001-2010) and drawing an action plan for the least developed countries for 2011-2020 set the main agenda of the Istanbul conference.

The visit would be President Ahmadinejad's first foreign trip since the beginning of the current Iranian year (started on March 21).

The Iranian president was also in Istanbul in December 2010 to attend the 11th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
