Opposition Spokesman: Bahrainis to Show Crushing Reaction to Execution of Protesters

TEHRAN,May 9 (FNA)- A Bahraini opposition spokesman cautioned the Manama regime to avoid executing antigovernment protesters, warning that the measure would change people's peaceful protests to confrontation and acts of reprisal.
Speaking to FNA on Monday, Secretary-General of Bahrain's Khalas Movement and spokesman of Bahrain's February 14 Revolution Abdul Raouf al-Shayeb pointed to the one-week deadline given by the revolutionary forces to the Manama regime for the freedom of detained protesters, and cautioned that the country's revolution will enter a new phase after the deadline is expired.

"Definitely after the end of the deadline on Thursday, the level of the resistance shown by the revolutionary people against the al-Khalifa regime will intensify," al-Shayeb stated.

"Following the deadline, people will end peaceful protests and civil disobedience and they will no more give flowers to the security forces," he said, and added, "I believe that the time has arrived for confrontation against the oppressive forces and their expulsion from Bahrain with despise and humiliation."

He further underlined people's resolve to continue their protests against the Bahraini regime, adding that the regime's military approach cannot undermine people's will and determination.

His remarks came after a Bahraini national security court sentenced to death four Shiite protesters for the alleged crime of killing two policemen in antigovernment protests in the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom earlier this year.

The verdict ended a closed-door trial of seven Shiite men charged with premeditated murder for intentionally running over two policemen with a vehicle during the protests. The military court sentenced four of the men to death and three to life imprisonment, according to the Bahrain News Agency.

The seven men, most of whom ranged from 20 to 25 years old, had pleaded not guilty.

The convictions are the first judicial action related to the demonstrations that have rocked the country. Opposition leaders, including the nation's largest Shiite political organization, criticized the verdict, calling it part of the wider crackdown on dissidents underway in the kingdom.

At least fifty protesters have been killed and hundreds of others arrested in the crackdown. Four protesters have died in police custody since their arrests.
