Spokesman: Iran-Egypt Ties Beneficial to Entire Region

TEHRAN, May 10 (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast underlined the positive outcomes of close ties between Iran and Egypt for the region and the Muslim world.
"The two nations want Iran and Egypt to have relations and these relations serve the interests of all the regional countries and the Muslim world," Mehman-Parast said in an interview with Al-Alam TV network.

"Naturally, we welcome formal relations at the highest levels possible," the spokesman noted.

He further mentioned that the necessary grounds have been prepared for the resumption of bilateral ties between Tehran and Cairo, and said the two countries' foreign ministers will most likely attend a meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Meantime, the spokesman cautioned that the US and the Zionist regime are trying to fill the regional states with deep worries about the establishment of close ties between Iran and Egypt, and underscored that the US-Israeli move "is a plot which must be confronted vigilantly".

He also assured that relations between Tehran and Cairo would not harm the interests of any third party.

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi had earlier announced that a joint meeting with his Egyptian counterpart is on the agenda of his future visit to Bali.

"Iran, Egypt and Cuba are at present members of the NAM troika and the foreign ministers of the three countries are due to meet and confer with each other on the activities of the NAM in a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers in Bali, Indonesia" in May, Salehi told FNA.

"During the (NAM) meeting I will meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi to discuss issues related to NAM as well as bilateral issues," he added.

After the collapse of Hosni Mubarak's regime, the Iranian and Egyptian officials voiced their interest in the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Iran's top diplomat Ali Akbar Salehi officially invited Egypt's newly appointed Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi to pay a visit to Tehran.

The invitation letter was submitted to the Egyptian foreign minister during a meeting between Director of Iran's Interest Section in Cairo Mojtaba Amani and al-Arabi.

Al-Arabi in his first press conference earlier last month announced Cairo's preparedness to open "a new page with Iran".

The official went on to say that the Egyptian government does not see Iran as an enemy state, noting the two countries have historically rooted relations.

He further stated that establishment of diplomatic ties depends on the Iranian side.

In reply, Salehi also said that Iran is ready to resume relations with Cairo.
