Activist Warns about Further Attack on Holy Sites by Saudi Extremists

TEHRAN,May 11 (FNA)- A prominent Egyptian religious figure said that extremist Salafists who have been behind the recent attacks on the holy sites in Egypt are supported by the Saudi regime, and warned that these Saudi-backed attacks may further intensify in coming days.
Speaking to FNA in Cairo on Wednesday, Head of Egypt's Higher Council of the Al al-Bait Muhammad Ad-Darini stated that "Salafists are Al Saud's mercenaries" and (Saudi) Wahhabites are encouraging them to attack other holy places throughout Egypt.

He said that Salafists have intensified their attacks after they failed to get Al Azhar grand religious leadership to issue a Fatwa (religious order) for destroying holy places in the country.

Ad-Darini also said that Salafists will intensify their attacks in those provinces which are home to holy Muslim shrines as well as the various Shiite-resided towns and neighborhoods in Cairo.

More than two months since former president Hosni Mubarak was forced out of office after 30 years in power, local political figures and analysts warn that "counterrevolutionary elements" are working behind the scene to undermine the Egyptian revolution and thwart Egypt's ongoing transition to democracy.

Recent weeks have also seen an unprecedented rash of attacks on religious shrines revered by Egypt's Sufi Muslim community.

Earlier in April attackers vandalized the Sidi Abdel Rahman shrine at a mosque in Qalyoub, North of Cairo, a move that many political observers believed to be supported by Saudi Arabia.

As regards Shiites' strategy to thwart future attack, Ad-Darini said that Sufi communities agreed to form popular committees in a bid to defend holy places and shrines.
