POLICE GRILL TWO RETIRED GENERALS OVER SOPHIAAN'S DEATH
Jakarta, Sept. 5 (ANTARA) - East Java Police's Traffic investigation unit team grilled two retired generals as witnesses of the fatal accident which had killed actor and politician Sophan Sophiaan at Plangor village, Kedunggalar subdistrict, Ngawi District, East Java, last May 17, 2008.
The two retired generals were Roesmanhadi and Peter Wattimena, Insp Gen Abubakar Nataprawaira, a spokesman of the National Police, said here on Friday.
"Today, Roesmanhadi and Wattimena were grilled by investigators of the Ngawi Police at the Police's Traffic Directorate office," Abubakar said.
The grilling was needed to find out the cause of Sophiaan's death, he said.
The Police also twice summoned Atin, a woman whose vehicle was behind Sophiaan's motorcycle when the accident happened. She failed to meet the first summons.
"We hope that Mrs. Atin will come for the second summons," Abubakar said.
Nine witnesses, comprising participants, local people and security guards, said they did not see Sophiaan being hit by another vehicle from behind when the accident occurred.
Earlier, a witness identified as Murjoko, said he saw a motorcycle hit Sophiaan. But in a grilling conducted by the Ngawi Police, Murjoko said he was standing around 500 meters to 750 meters from the spot where the accident happened. He also said he approached the spot around three hours after the accident.
"Murjoko also admitted that he gave false information that Sophiaan was hit from the back, because he wanted to appear on television," Abubakar said.
Sophiaan was killed in a motorcycle accident on May 17, 2008 at the age of 64, when he was participating in a motorcycle parade dubbed "The Route of National Awakening" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of National Awakening.
Riding at a moderate speed, his motorcycle ran into a large hole in Sragen, near the town's border with Ngawi, East Java. He suffered internal injuries and a broken leg in the accident.
Sophiaan was born in the city of Makassar, South Sulawesi, on April 26, 1944.
