HOUSE SPEAKER SUPPORTS PLAN TO CREATE MORE GREEN BELTS IN JAKARTA
Jakarta, Sept 5 (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono has thrown his weight behind a plan to create more and maintain existing green belts in Jakarta.
"Hence, the plan to relocate 27 gas stations built on green belts is worth supporting and implementing," he said at a get-together with Muslims at Arridho Mosque in East Jakarta on Friday.
One of the problems facing the capital was limited land space and poorly-maintained environment, he said.
East Jakarta would be susceptible to social crimes if the government did not pay attention to the environment and densely-populated areas, he said.
The creation of green belts in the capital was one of the government's efforts to give 'breathing space' to city dwellers who had so far been living in densely-populated areas, he said.
"If an area has been declared a green belt, any party that violates the ruling by, for instance, opening a gasoline station there, must be dealt with," he said.
The government must dismantle the 27 gas stations immediately , or it would give the impression that it could only demolish buildings owned by ordinary people, he said.
He said the creation of more green belts in densely-populated Jakarta would accord with the world community's efforts to deal with climate change.
