DEMAND FOR LPG IN 12-KG CYLINDERS UP
Jakarta, Sept 5 (ANTARA) - State oil and gas company Pertamina said demand for liquefied petroelum gas (LPG) in 12-kg cylinders continues to rise though its price was raised twice since July 2008.
The use of LPG in 12-cylinders rose 5 percent to 87,000-88,000 tons in August from 85,000 tons a month earlier, Pertamina President Director Ari Soemarno said on Friday.
"We already anticipated the increase by importing more 12-kg cylinders. We imported them because local producers concentrated on producing 3-kg cylinders," he said.
Pertamina raised the price of LPG in 12-kg cylinders on July 1 and August 25.
Ari said the rise in the use of LPG in 12-kg cylinders was because many households switched to gas from kerosene in line with the government's kerosene-to-gas conversion program.
"It turns out that many middle-income households had been using kerosene. But soon after kerosene was withdrawn, they switched to LPG in 12-cylinders," he said.
He said the price of LPG in 12-kg cylinders reached Rp150,000-Rp200,000 in the eastern part of Indonesia due to lack of transpportation facilities.
"To supply LPG to Kupang (capital of East Nusa Tenggara province), we use cylinders brought from Bali which is the nearest LPG refilling station. So the agents must bear the transportation cost," he said.
