RI'S EXPORTS TO JAPAN FALL 3 PCT DUE TO ECONOMIC RECESSION
Jakarta, Sept 5 (ANTARA) - Indonesia's non-oil/non-gas exports to Japan in the first seven months of 2008 fell 3 percent from the same period last year due to the latter's sluggish economic growth, a minister said.
"The Japanese economy is slowing down. It is projected to grow at more than 1 percent this year so demand for non-oil/non-gas commodities is low," Trade Minister Mari Elkas Pangestu said in a press conference here on Friday.
The impact of tariff reduction under the economic partnership agreement on Indonesia's exports to Japan had not yet been visible because it was only put into force as of July 1, 2008, she said.
"We hope textile, textile product and footwear exports whose import duty is nill percent will boost our exports to Japan," she said.
Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) show Indonesia's non-oil/non-gas exports to Japan in the January-July 2008 period fell to US$7.92 billion from US$8.13 billion in the same period last year.
However, Indonesia's non-oil/non-gas exports to other countries such as the United States and European Union continue to grow.
"On average our exports to other Asian countries grew 20 percent. Our exports to Malaysia grew 47 percent and to China 30 percent," the minister said.
