Iran's Top Military Official Welcomes Palestinian Unity Deal

TEHRAN, May 15 (FNA)- Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi welcomed the recent reconciliation agreement signed by the different Palestinian groups, and described it as an opportunity to change the regional equations to the benefit of the Palestinian nation.

"The continued life of the agreement between Fatah and Hamas movements within the framework of the Islamic and revolutionary teachings will create new conditions in the occupied Palestine that can change the situation of the occupied territories to the benefit of the Palestinian nation through real consensus, convergence and mobilization of all capacities and resistance institutions," Firouzabadi said on Sunday.

"Unity among Palestinians is graced with abundant positive outcomes provided that this unity is based on the demands of the oppressed and displaced Palestinian people and continued Intifada until the return of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland and creation of a Palestinian state in the holy Quds," he stressed.

The comments by the Iranian commander came days after Thirteen Palestinian groups including, Fatah and Hamas, signed a landmark unity deal ending their long-running division.

Prior to the agreement, the Islamic movement Hamas was at loggerheads with Fatah, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, since Hamas won the parliamentary elections in January of 2006. After winning the elections, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip ending months of bloody conflict with Fatah allied security forces. Egypt and other Arab countries' attempts of reaching a reconciliation deal between the two largest Palestinian factions had earlier failed.

According to internal sources, the agreement will include formation of a caretaker government until elections take place in both the West Bank and Gaza.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi welcomed the Palestinian reconciliation agreement, and called it a positive move towards materializing Palestinian people's goals and rights.

Mideast conditions have changed totally in the last few months. Egyptians, who helped the Israeli regime to tighten its siege of Gaza Strip until just a few months ago, now take to the streets to shout their support for the Palestinians and to ask the government in Cairo to sever all ties with the Zionist regime of Israel.

The new conditions in the region which have changed the power balance in favor of the Palestinians pushed Washington's Special Envoy for Mideast Peace George Mitchell to resign his post yesterday, a move perceived by many in the world as an indication of the failure of the so-called peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), which heralds a new era in the Middle-East.
