OPEC Governor Denies Bloomberg Report on OPEC Presidency

TEHRAN, May 16 (FNA)- Iran's OPEC Governor Mohammad Ali Khatibi rejected an early Sunday report quoting him as saying that Iranian energy minister would take care of Iran's presidency over the oil exporters' group, stressing that this would be the oil ministry caretaker who would be responsible for the job.
Bloomberg alleged in a Sunday report that Khatibi had named the Iranian Energy Minister, Majid Namjou, as the man responsible for Iran's presidency over OPEC.

Khatibi strongly denied the report, and said, "I did not mention the name of anyone in that interview."

"Anyone who will be appointed as the caretaker of the Iranian oil ministry will also take care of the job, now this could be Mr. Namjou or Mr. president would appoint someone else," Khatibi said.

Earlier today, Bloomberg quoted Khatibi as saying, "Energy Minister Majid Namjou's role as head of Iran's newly merged oil and energy ministries means he will also assume the nation's current role as president of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries."

Iran's Oil Minister Massoud Mir-Kazzemi and other officials stepped down following planned mergers by a number of ministries.

Industry and Mines Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian and Welfare Minister Sadegh Mahsouli also left the cabinet.

Iran last week merged the Oil Ministry with the Energy Ministry, Industries and Mines Ministry with the Commerce Ministry, and the Welfare Ministry with the Labor Ministry in a move to cut the number of government departments to 17 from 21 and boost the administration's efficiency.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government will have to nominate the ministers for the merged ministries to the parliament and seek votes of confidence, senior parliament member Hossein Sobhaninia said last week.
