GOVT WATCHING OUT FOR OBSTACLES TO STAPLE FOOD DISTRIBUTION

Jakarta, Sept 6 (ANTARA) - The trade ministry is watching out for hindrances in interinsular distribution of staple foods following the start of the rainy season that caused high tides because the price of the goods have been higher outside Java as supply could not be distributed evenly among the regions.

Trade Minister Mari Pangestu said here on Friday "we would continue monitoring the markets not only at central levels but also in the regions in cooperation with local trade agencies to secure supply and its smooth distribution to maintain price stability."

She said her office and local trade agencies had already set up posts to monitor staple food prices, their supply and distribution to various regions.

She said from September 4 discount sales operations had also been started in 16 provinces in cooperation with local trade agencies and businessmen.

The price of staple foods such as rice and sugar had been stable while the price of cooking oil in bulk dropped from around Rp11,000 to Rp9,000 per kilogram while the price of flour from Rp7,500 to Rp7,000 per kilogram, according to the trade ministry.
"This morning the price of meat at Jatinegara market here rose a little but the price of chicken was down from Rp24,000 to Rp22,000 per kilogram," she said.
She said the Jakarta governor had planned to conduct market operations for food items such as meat, chicken, eggs and others ahead of the post-fasting holidays early next month.
For the current fasting month and the post-fasting celebrations the minister had called on distributors and retailers to take an appropriate profit. Meanwhile she also called on consumers to examine the expiry date, production and halal (allowed in Islam) codes, Indonesia National Standard marks when buying processed food products.
