SEMEN PADANG PLANS TO CUT EXPORTS

Jakarta, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - State-owned cement maker PT Semen Padang plans to cut exports as domestic demand for cement this year is expected to double from 2007.

"In the first semester of 2008 demand grew remarkably. In the second semester it will slightly fall. But overall, it will grow 12 percent this year. Last year, it grew 6 percent," PT Semen Padang Finance Director Epriliyono Budi said at the weekend.

PT Semen Padang has set itself the target of selling 6.4 million tons of cement this year. However, domestic demand for the commodity in the first half of 2008 rose 17 percent.

In the first semester of 2008, demand for cement in Sumatra, the company's main market, increased up to 14 percent from the same period last year.

To meet the rising demand on the island which stood at 4.2 million tons in the first half of 2007 PT Semen Padang would receive a supply of 500,000 tons from PT Semen Gresik as its parent company, he said.

In addition, PT Semen Padang would also sell nearly 1 million tons of its stocks which had originally been planned for export to the domestic market if it offered competitive prices, he said.

PT Semen Padang now has four factories with a combined production capacity of 5.8 million tons. The company is in the process of building a new factory with a planned capacity of 2.5 million tons.
