TRADE MINISTRY, POLICE TO PROBE CIRCULATION OF REFINED SUGAR SOON

Jakarta, Sept 6 (ANTARA) - The Trade Ministry and the National Police Headquarters will soon investigate the circulation of refined sugar in the community, an official said.

Director of Circulating Goods and Service Control at the Trade Ministry Syahrul R Sampurna Jaya said here on Sunday he had sent copies of the circular of the Director General of Trade dated August 4, 2008 to all relevant agencies to control the circulation of refined sugar.

"On April 2, the Trade Minister issued a circular asking the Director General of Trade to control the circulation of refined sugar soon. Afterwards, the Director General of Trade issued a circular to all working units," he said.

Although copies of the circular had been sent to the relevant agencies, they were still unable to control the circulation of refined sugar and that a team of civil servant investigators conducted an investigation in the field, he said.

The preliminary result of the investigation showed that 24 percent of sugar circulating in South Sulawesi was refined sugar. Actually, the sugar was earmarked for food and beverage industries, he said.

Realizing that the circulation of refined sugar was on the increase, the Trade Ministry decided to control it, he said.

The distributors who were found guilty of distributing refined sugar to the public would be subject to sanction because they inflicted losses on the state, he said.

"For the time being we have yet to name any suspect," he said.
