CHINA OPENS ITS MARKET FOR RI'S SALAK FRUIT

Beijing, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - The Chinese government has begun to open its market for Indonesian salak fruit after a number of officials from its General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) visited Indonesia on Sept 3-4 to see for themselves salak fruit cultivation.

"A number of AQSIQ officials visited Indonesia early this month to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the relevant agency. One of the agreements reached during their visit is that Indonesia can export salak fruit to China," Deputy Chief of the Indonesian Mission in Beijing, Mohamad Oemar, said on Sunday.

In addition, China also had allowed Indonesia to export a number of food products and farm produce including vegetables and cereals to its market, he said.

The agreement would pave the way for Indonesia to boost its export of farm and plantation produce to China and compete with other countries, he said.

He said the agreement and AQSIQ officials' visit to Indonesia were a manifestation of the two countries' commitment to enhancing and realizing the strategic cooperation agreement signed by the two governments in Jakarta in 2005.

"We hope that China's decision to open its market for Indonesian fruits and vegetables will increase our export of agricultural commodities to China," he said.

Indonesia asked China to open its market for Indonesian salak fruit on the occasion of an Indonesia-China joint commission meeting in Shanghai late last year.

During the meeting, Indonesian Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu also expressed hope that AQSIQ would send any of its officials to Indonesia to see for themselves salak fruit plantations.

"China's decision to open its market for Indonesian salak fruit is also the result of a G-to-G meeting a few months earlier which received a positive response," he said.
