GRASSROOTS INCREASINGLY TIGHTENING BELT AHEAD OF ISLAMIC HOLIDAY

Yogyakarta, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - Grassroots people are forced to increasingly tighten their belt due to current economic hardships ahead of the Islamic post-fasting holiday of Lebaran.

"Those who earn just enough to live on and uncertainly such as "becak" (tricycle) drivers and manual workers in the market would find it hard to meet the Lebaran needs as prices have been going up significantly," a socio-political observer from local state Gajah Mada University, Mutiah, said here on Sunday,

She advised that the people balanced their needs with their income and made a kind of a priority list of goods they had to buy, adding they had to first meet their foods needs so that they could celebrate the festival.

"They need not force to buy other things like new clothes," she said.
To those who are well-off she appealed to control their consumption in consideration of those who still live below the poverty line.

"Those who have more money are advised to buy just enough to meet their Lebaran needs to avoid social jealousy. It would be better if they share their fortune with the needy to make the Lebaran festival more meaningful," she said.
